In Kashare Subcounty, Kashari, Mbarara District, a quiet revolution is unfolding—led not by politicians or development agencies, but by ordinary women determined to transform their community.
A group of about 100 women have come together under a unique initiative: every three months, they pool their resources to build a water tank for one of the members’ households. Slowly but surely, they are changing lives—one tank at a time.
For years, women in rural Uganda have carried the burden of water scarcity. Walking long distances, queuing at wells, and struggling with limited water for both domestic and agricultural use has been the daily reality. In Kashare, this women’s initiative is rewrite ng that story. With each tank constructed, a family gains reliable access to clean water right at their doorstep.
The impact goes beyond convenience. Having water at home eases the burden on women and children, who often spend hours fetching it. That time is now invested in farming, small businesses, and education. The tanks are also improving sanitation, reducing waterborne diseases, and giving households dignity and security.
What makes this initiative remarkable is the spirit of solidarity behind it. Every woman contributes what she can, knowing that in time, her home too will benefit. It is a model of community-driven development—built on trust, patience, and shared responsibility.
As the women of Kashare prove, development does not always come from outside interventions. Sometimes, it begins with neighbors holding hands, pooling their meagre resources, and believing in the power of unity.
One tank may not seem like much, but for these women, each one represents freedom—from long treks for water, from the risk of disease, and from the limitations of poverty. And as the tanks rise across Kashare, so too does the hope of a better future.
