Building Brilliance: How Julia Karungi Grew Her Hygiene Business Through dfcu Bank’s Women-Focused Program

Building a product is one thing. Building a business is another. A good product begins with an idea, the right formulation and a market need. A successful business requires much more, certification, production systems, working capital, distribution, customer trust and the ability to keep improving as demand grows.

Julia Karungi has built both.

After registering Bubbly Inner Beauty Limited in 2016, she officially launched operations in 2019 with a vision to manufacture high-quality cleaning and personal care products for Ugandan consumers. But breaking into the hygiene products market was never going to be easy. Like many local manufacturers, she had to navigate strict regulatory requirements while competing against long-established brands.

The business started modestly. Products were mixed in a bucket, production relied on a part-time chemist, and a single salesperson introduced the brand to customers. Every shilling earned was reinvested into improving production, upgrading packaging, meeting certification standards and expanding distribution.

As demand grew, so did the challenges.

Scaling the business required more than producing quality products. It meant investing in machinery, strengthening operations, improving distribution and putting systems in place to support long-term growth.

That journey led Julia to dfcu Bank.

She joined the Bank's Advancing Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) programme, an initiative that equips women-owned businesses with mentorship, business development support, networking opportunities and access to markets.

For Julia, the programme offered more than business advice—it connected her to a community of women entrepreneurs facing similar challenges and provided practical insights that she could apply to her own business.

"Being part of the dfcu network showed me that many of the challenges I was facing were not unique. Learning from other entrepreneurs gave me practical ideas that I have been able to apply in growing Bubbly Inner Beauty," she says.

Through AWE, Julia also became part of dfcu Bank's broader Women in Business platform, one of Uganda's longest-running initiatives dedicated to supporting women entrepreneurs.

The programme addresses some of the biggest barriers facing women-led businesses. Although women own nearly 40 percent of businesses in Uganda, many still struggle to access the financing, technical support, business networks and market opportunities needed to grow. For manufacturers, these challenges are even greater, as expansion requires significant investment in equipment, skilled labour, supply chains and quality assurance.

Today, Bubbly Inner Beauty has evolved from a small startup into a mechanised manufacturing business employing more than ten people. The company has invested in delivery infrastructure, strengthened its operations and continues to grow its presence in the market.

Julia's next goal is to acquire additional manufacturing equipment, increase production capacity and expand beyond Kampala to reach customers across Uganda.

"The resilience, growth and willingness to keep learning from other dfcu entrepreneurs inspires me every day," she says.

Bubbly Inner Beauty's journey demonstrates what is possible when entrepreneurial determination is matched with the right support. Through its Women in Business platform and the Advancing Women Entrepreneurs programme, dfcu Bank continues to equip women-led enterprises with the knowledge, networks and opportunities they need to grow stronger businesses, create jobs and contribute to Uganda's industrial development.
